The Effects of The Silent Treatment

There are many negative feelings associated to receiving the silent treatment. The short term and long term effects that the recipient feels can be as minor as being slightly annoyed and feeling ostracized. Those who receive the silent treatment often feel a need a belonging, a loss of self esteem, and a loss of control. The silent treatment can even result in overeating, and eating unhealthy food.

Short term effects of the silent treatment.

When the giver begins the silent treatment, they often do so with the intent for the recipient to feel remorse, guilt, or obligation. While these feelings often occur, it is also very likely for the recipient to feel opposite feelings such as anger, frustration, and lack of obligation or responsibility.

Giving the silent treatment does not foster feelings of love or compassion in either party.

Long term effects of the silent treatment.

The results of the silent treatment obviously vary depending on individual personalities depending on the length and frequency the silent treatment is given. There are no positive long lasting effects of the silent treatment for either party.
